Brutal Honesty

So as my kids walked into my classroom today, they quickly noticed that I had chopped about a foot off my hair. One thing I love about kids is that they are so observant...and honest. One of my beginners from Vietnam so vehemently stated "Mrs. Gongora (in Vietnamese accent), yo ha!" Like he was somewhat angry! I said, "Yes, I know," to which he replied, "It ugly."

Thanks.

Then, comes in one of my Chinese kids. "You cut yo hair!" Again, with an angry tone. Yes, you're right, I did. "Do you not like it?" I return. "No, I don't!"

Ok, again, thanks.

I love my kiddos. They tell me the truth.

Of course, there were the ones that absolutely "oooo-ed" and "ahhhhh-ed" over it as well. I think it's so humorous the reactions kids have. They are so dramatic. Now, my question is: Brutal honesty or lack of cultural education? Do they not know that you don't tell someone their hair looks ugly??? I guess it's my job to teach them the do's and don't's of our culture here in the US. Although it doesn't bother me what they think, it could one day not serve them well to be so honest about their opinions.
